LGBTQ+ Workers, COVID-19, and Unemployment Benefits

Online

This webinar is for any LGBTQ+ worker whose job has been impacted by COVID-19 and seeks information about unemployment benefits. Join us if you work for a private business, you are an independent contractor, or you are not sure if your employment is eligible for benefits. We will cover how to access benefits if:

  • you have experienced job loss or a reduction in hours;
  • your benefits have been affected because of a name/gender mismatch;
  • you have experienced anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination or illegal behavior and are not sure you can continue working;
  • you worked as a legal sex worker or adult entertainer and are not sure if you are eligible for benefits; or
  • you have been unable to access unemployment due to a prior overpayment.
  • Speakers from the Unemployment Law Project, QLaw Foundation, LGBTQ+ Legal Clinic, and Ingersoll Gender Center will answer questions about eligibility for state unemployment insurance benefits, expanded eligibility under the CARES Act, how to navigate common application problems, and what to do if your application has been denied.

    Learn more about this week's workshop below:

    Trans Grief & Death Planning Workshop: Kalisto Nanen, affectionately known as Listo Nanen by his friends and family is a student funeral director and undertaker, breath worker, death guide, plant worker, and performance artist just to name a few of his multi-talents. He is the owner and founder of Syzygy Passings a Death Guide business that works in advance care directives, grief support, and arts. In the era of a modern pandemic as well as a world under oppression the thought of death is picking at our minds and I am here to guide you through planning death so that we as transgender community and families of transgender individuals can rest assured that our bodies will be remembered the way we want them to be remembered. In the hour break out group we will work over a listening section where we talk about where we are at in our lives and discuss our fears, we will go into a 5-10 minute session where we will work on writing our plans and then share them. We will also work through knowing what the current Washington State Advance Care Directive looks like, and discuss rights at the end of life.
